The Toshiba SD-360E is a cheap (60GBP) upscaling DVD player, which will give you 720p/1080i output over HDMI, until you eventually get a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player. When it works, it’s good, but mine only lasted 6 months before it started freezing all the time, failed to recognize discs, and eventually displayed this:

I was just packing it up ready to send back, and I just thought I’d put this on the site for anyone researching it on the net - you get what you pay for.

Please feel free to ask me any questions about this model that I may be able to answer, having owned one.

Update - 12/02/2007

On the plus side, Toshiba will replace the faulty item by directly courier, if they have it in stock, which they now have done. Mind you, I’ve only had the new one a week, and it’s already frozen twice, each time for about 10 seconds, so already I’m getting a bad feeling.

If you can’t get YouTube at work, try this. I’ve been told you can’t get it at Reuters in Nottingham - I saw this and thought of you…

Full instructions here, but here’s the jist of it…

Its easy, simply paste the following URL in to your browser’s address bar and replace www.site.com with the URL that you received from your friend.

http://www.google.com/translate?
langpair=en|en&u=www.site.com

So for example if the URL for the video is;

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4xOt9m76sNA

simply change the URL above to;

http://www.google.com/translate?
langpair=en|en&u=www.youtube.com/ watch?v=4xOt9m76sNA

… and say hello to YouTube!

Saw this at Brewers Quay Shopping Village, whilst visiting family in Weymouth this weekend.

This is the kind of thing we need in Nottingham, then I’m sure the crime rate would plummet.

Say what you see, 5 seconds here we go…

It’s good but it’s not right.

We took Holly to see Santa at Wheatcroft Garden Centre, on the A52 near Nottingham at the weekend. I tried to take a picture of Holly by a display, but she ran off. But we did marvel at the amazing effort they’ve gone to on the art work…

See the two Jellybaby-type things at the bottom right. What’s going on with the face on the red one?! Some sort of evil, slightly boss-eyed, melancholy character?

That’s all. As you were.

If your have broadband or a similar high speed connection, try this tweak for Firefox (FF) and Internet Explorer (IE). Apparently FF and IE have some default settings to optimize them for dial-up connections, but this quick guide shows you how to change those settings so that they work better with broadband. They’re not obvious Tools > Settings changes, but more hidden. The IE tweak requires you to go into the Windows registry, though, so don’t do it if you’re unfamiliar with that sort of thing… I’ve tried the FF one, and it’s made my browsing much faster.

Chris has asked me to answer 5 questions, and pass it on to 5 more people with web logs. I don’t know 5 other people yet, so I’m just passing it on to 4.

Here’s the questions, and my answers. The four people I’m passing it onto can answer the same 5 questions, or change any of the first 4, but the last one has to be the same…

I’m passing them on to Deborah, Lisa, Barnze and Skytower

The 5 questions, which I’ve not changed, but the next people to answer them can if they like (apart from the 5th), are…

  1. What have you learned so far from your visitors?
  2. If someone would offer to pay for a course (or more) for you, what would that course be?
  3. Are you satisfied with what you’ve achieved this year, in general?
  4. Did blogging changed your life or your personality in any way?
  5. If you had the opportunity to meet one person that you admire the most in the world, who that person would be?

And here’s my answers, but they’re a bit boring…

  1. What have you learned so far from your visitors?
    Lots of URLs
  2. If someone would offer to pay for a course (or more) for you, what would that course be?
    Oracle Forms
  3. Are you satisfied with what you’ve achieved this year, in general?
    Yes
  4. Did blogging changed your life or your personality in any way?
    Not really!
  5. If you had the opportunity to meet one person that you admire the most in the world, who that person would be?
    Kate Winslet maybe. Richard Dawkins would be quite interesting. I’m not bothered really.

Watch idiots argue with reason!

Richard Dawkins discusses his assertion that, without empirical proof, there is no God, that all religions are based on ideas without evidence, and as such, should not be believed until there is evidence to the contrary.

Quite a long clip, but v. interesting…
